Spanish fiction cinema (1990-2020), indigenous heritage and tourism

Universitat de València
25 and 26 May 2021

The role played by contemporary cinema as an inductor of tourism is widely recognised by the abundant academic literature that has been dealing with the subject for decades. In addition to the disciplines directly involved, such as Audiovisual Communication and Tourism, in recent years there have been studies in Geography, Sociology, Economics, Anthropology and Marketing that have made significant contributions to the study of the phenomenon. In line with the aforementioned academic interest, the current film industry is fully aware of the capacity of its films to motivate viewers’ interest in travelling to the places they show. So much so that in the last three decades there has been a progressive increase in the number of location shoots which are carefully chosen. Consequently, attractions shown in films are maximised, in turn, by the multiple filming devices made possible by current technology.

As far as Spanish cinema is concerned, it has been clearly involved in this trend since the nineties of the last century. It is enough to review the productions that have emerged since then until the present day to see how the Spanish industry and its creators have understood the capacity of the seventh art to seduce the public’s gaze. From this awareness, they make use of the rich natural and cultural heritage that the country treasures, incorporating it into the films to create synergies with the powerful Spanish tourist industry. In this dynamic, the best productions of the latest Spanish cinema show a growing interest in the exhibition of the most attractive natural and urban environments of the native geography through a neat production work and careful photography aimed at highlighting their uniqueness and beauty. Therefore, the spaces shown in the films connect with the traditions, rites, festivities, gastronomic habits, etc., specific to the different localities and autonomous communities. For this reason, each film conveys very measured doses of information about the cultural heritage, material or immaterial, inherent to the spaces of the action, thus amplifying their seductive power for the spectator.
